Function keys can be custom labeled by the user with plastic inserts. The inserts can be custom legended with text and/or graphics, and slipped into a protective pocket behind the faceplate.
The OM420 Operator Panel is part of Optimation's OptiMate® series. Each OptiMate® module is designed to connect to most PLC's with a single cable connection. OptiMate® 400 series panels can be used individually, with a PLC, or in a microprocessor system.
When used with a microprocessor system, simple communications over an RS232 communications cable allows the microprocessor to directly control the LCD display as well as to read function key status.
When used with a PLC, operation is transparent to the user. Terminal functions tie directly into your PLC ladder logic program. The OM420 takes care of the rest.

Operational
Overview
The OM420 Panel incorporates all
of the basic elements necessary for operator interface. Function keys allow
operator function selection, and the alphanumeric display provides text information
and numerical display capability. The OM420 interfaces over an RS232 serial
link to any computer-based system and many popular PLCs. In a computer-based
system, interface occurs via a very easy to use OptiMate® Hex protocol.
For a PLC-based system, operation is totally controlled through a bank of
7 PLC registers. Everything else is handled by the OM420 terminal.
PLC
- Based Systems
PLC-based systems access the OM420
via a bank of 7 registers. Buttons appear as coils and contacts
(or register bits) in the PLC. Messages can be predefined, stored in the
OM420 and used by the PLC program. To use a predefined message,
your PLC program simply places the message number that you have associated with
the message into a PLC register. Text, data display, and arrow
adjustment messages are all available. Up to 160 messages can be predefined.
Use
with a Computer
The OM420 Panel provides
all of the same capabilities to a computer-based system
that it does to a PLC system. The OptiMate® Hex protocol makes computer-based
applications a very simple undertaking. Message numbers
and display data are sent to the OM420 over a serial
link. Button status can be read back from the OM420 by the same
serial link. Also, in addition to the 160 predefined messages, additional
messages with embedded data can be sent to the OM420 via the serial link.
